# Lafza > Voice to text for any app on Windows and Mac. Hold a key, speak, let go: clean text lands at the cursor. Free for personal use, no account, your own speech-service key. Lafza (Arabic لفظة, "a spoken word") is a desktop app for Windows and macOS that turns speech into text at the cursor, in any app. The user holds a keyboard shortcut (or clicks a small floating mic by the text cursor), speaks, and lets go. The text is cleaned up and pasted where they were typing. Key facts: - Platforms: Windows 10 and 11 (Intel, AMD, ARM); macOS 14 or later. iPhone and Android are planned: share a voice message (WhatsApp included) or any recording to read it, tap and talk to dictate, with everything kept as notes. They are not available yet. - Status: opening soon; early access sign-up on the site. - Price: free for personal use, with no word limit, no time limit and no account. An optional one-time licence (no subscription) covers work use and adds offline transcription, personal vocabulary, per-app writing styles, suggestions, and dictations over two minutes. - It needs a key from a speech service: Groq (has a free plan with no card), OpenAI or Deepgram. The user pays that service directly, if at all. Setup takes a minute or two. - Privacy: audio goes directly from the computer to the service the user chose. Lafza has no server in between. Keys are stored in Windows Credential Manager or macOS Keychain. Anonymous reports are off by default. - Languages: those of the speech service (Whisper handles around 100). Built with Arabic, Spanish and mixed-language speech in mind, including right-to-left text. It does not translate. - Clean-up (polish): removes filler words and false starts, fixes punctuation and grammar, follows spoken commands such as "new paragraph". Any change can be undone with one click ("what polish changed"). - Voice notes: WhatsApp, Telegram or Signal voice messages (and m4a, mp3, wav, aac, 3gp, flac) can be dropped on the mic or shared to it, and become text, up to 30 minutes. Free. - Limits of the free version: two minutes per dictation. Not used in password fields. Windows apps running as administrator get the text on the clipboard instead of pasted. Good fit: people who write a lot, people dictating prompts to AI tools, people who mix languages, Arabic and Spanish speakers, people with RSI or dyslexia, anyone tired of long voice notes. Not a fit: meeting recording and transcription, mobile dictation, or anyone needing it to work with no key and no payment while offline. ## Pages - [Home](https://lafza.app/): what Lafza does, with a live demo and FAQ - [Español](https://lafza.app/es/) and [العربية](https://lafza.app/ar/) - [Windows](https://lafza.app/windows/): A native voice typing app for Windows.
